"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play IS serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”  - Fred Rogers

Why?

You might remember back in 2020 there was this little, tiny, thing that happened where the whole world shut down for a bit. Not long after, 5 of my soon-to-be closest colleagues and I found ourselves inventing virtual kindergarten. No one had any materials, precisely because teaching online kindergarten classes is not the brightest idea ever. But, when it's that or keel over from a deadly disease, you find a way.

I didn't know much about teaching 5 and 6-year-olds remotely (shockingly, not covered in teacher prep programs), but I knew that I wasn't going to sacrifice the combination of fun and rigor they deserved. So, I decided to learn how to use a computer for more than just email and began creating my own materials. I figured other bleary-eyed teachers could use them too.

And that, my friends, is the true story of how The Felt Tip Pen was born.

What?

Just about everything on my TPT site is something I use or have used in my classroom. Children need engagement, and that can come in many forms. Some enjoy puzzles, others need movement, still others prefer to sit quietly and complete a worksheet...I could go on.

In the end, as long as what they are doing has their full attention, they are learning. And children love learning.
